2017 MEDICATION MANAGEMENT & SAFETY STUDY WITH BECTON, DICKINSON AND COMPANY (BD)

HIMSS Analytics conducted research on behalf of BD Medical to understand the state of the medication management market and identify the challenges that exist within it. Through quantitative studies with 1,131 patients and 153 key personnel at U.S. hospitals and health systems, and a qualitative study involving 20 of the 153 respondents, HIMSS Analytics discovered that while medication errors still exist, significant opportunities exist to reduce those numbers.

During this presentation, you’ll learn:

  • Over 50% of respondents stated that the greatest vulnerability in the medication management process exists in transitioning from one place to another and at the bedside.
  • Most participants indicate the medication management process captures at least 90% of their medication errors; there is significant room for improvement for those who consider it captures 90% or less.
  • Organizations larger than 251 beds recognize the greatest risk related to medication errors many anticipating annual financial costs in excess of $2M.
  • A combination of EMR and medication management solutions can support the decrease in medication errors.

ACHIEVING STAGE 7 UNDER THE NEW 2018 CRITERIA - A PRESENTATION WITH UNC HEALTH CARE SYSTEM & EPIC

On January 19th 2018, UNC Health Care System (UNCHCS) received the HIMSS Stage 7 award for 6 hospitals (EMRAM) and UNCHCS clinics (O-EMRAM) – becoming the very first to be validated under the new 2018 standards. Like all organizations who have made the leap from Stage 6 to 7, the time and effort we spent assessing, planning, organizing, and implementing this project was significant. Nevertheless, going through the validation process was definitely worth it – the value gained extends well beyond the award itself. One of the most important factors contributing to our success, was the guidance and support from other organizations who had already made the leap. The purpose of this presentation is to share our journey in hope that we can help others that are considering or are actively pursuing Stage 7.
