HIMSS Analytics Honors University of Missouri Health Care with Stage 7 Award

The HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award honors hospitals that operate in a paperless environment and represent best practices in implementation of the EMR

CHICAGO (November 28, 2012) - HIMSS Analytics announced that University of Missouri Health Care has received the HIMSS Stage 7 Award.  MU Health Care comprises five hospitals: Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, the Missouri Psychiatric Center, University Hospital, and Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The award represents attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM)?, which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

“Achieving the highest level of electronic medical record adoption is not only an honor, but a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our clinicians and information technology staff,” said Joanne Burns, chief information officer at MU Health Care. “Our goal has always been to provide the best environment for the patient and those who deliver their care. With less than two percent of health organizations in the United States at this level, this achievement shows that MU Health Care is a leader in health information technology.

The Tiger Institute for Health Innovation is a unique partnership between the University of Missouri and Cerner Corporation, with a goal of using health information technology to enhance the quality and safety of the care we provide,” Burns said. “MU Health believes that a solid technology infrastructure is the foundation for improving the health and care of patients and the community.”

“University of Missouri Health Care includes an academic medical center and four specialty hospitals in its complex, but well-designed, system and governance structure.  Now operating in a paperless environment, the healthcare system recovered a large amount of once-used space for film and paper storage,” said John P Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “As of Quarter 3, 2012, MU Health Care is among the 97 U.S. facilities, or 1.8 percent, of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database, to be awarded the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award.

MU Health Care will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La., on March 3-7, 2013. Visit the HIMSS Analytics Web site for more information on the Stage 7 award.
